Let me introduce myself. First, I'm not a farmer. I served as an intelligence officer in the US Navy (13 yrs) and the US Army (7 yrs). In 2017, the book Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes need Traditional Food, by Dr Kate (Catherine) Shanahan, MD, launched my journey into nutrition.
As an Intelligence Officer I had to adapt to changing threats and changing times. As a junior officer I became an expert on Soviet Bloc air defense systems. Then I became an expert on Iran's effort to control the Strait of Hormuz. After that I tracked submarines in the Barents Sea. Then I supported the air campaign in Desert Storm from Riyadh. Later I was learning the function of a DTMF* board in an IED and had to determine whether Chlorine gas on an Iraqi highway was a chemical weapon or an industrial accident. After retiring in 2012 I earned a Masters in Public Administration from Norwich University. Nutrition, farming, and the food system is one more area to research and understand.
I grew up in the Southwest on Mexican Food. My Navy travels introduced me to Asian food. I make pretty delicious lumpia and great Persian rice with a perfect Tahdig (crispy crust). I love to cook. I stir fry, grill, smoke, and occasionally bake. I lived through the erosion of our food system as it drifted toward the SAD. I love pizza, Oreos, and Pop Tarts as much as anyone, but we have to push back individually and as a society in order to return to a lean and active America. Help me.
